Rebuilding the HK rotor head is mod #1 on the HK 600. All of the HK gears are known to be made from inferior plastic. It's likely nothing about how you set them. Replacing them is mod #2. Replace the HK tail drive gears as well regardless of whether you have belt or TT tail drive. That should pretty much be all you have to do to get a decent heli out of the HK kit.
If you are going to fly hard 3D, keep an eye on the main-shaft bearings as well.
The skids should be fine...
