Question Ever Wonder WHY?

Has Anyone ever stopped to ask “WHY” we keep building, when we already have several planes?

(My wife really wants to know this too )

Originally we built so we could go flying, then because we kept breaking (Crashing) our planes, but after a while we learned how to fly and the crash rate drops off (usually).

Yet we keep on building and generally end up with more planes that we can fly and/ or NEED.

So why do we do it?

I have a theory… I like to be busy and I like to Create things. Building satisfies both of these needs.

If I’m not careful I may end up as a feature guest on ‘Hoarders’ … I actually know a couple of guys that SHOULD be on that show…

Of course then there is the whole idea about being a big kid who wants all the pretty shiny toys, plus I get bored with a plane after a while and I look for a different kind of aircraft to expand my skills (another good theory).

So why do YOU keep getting MORE planes?
Life is either a daring adventure...
...or nothing.

Re: Ever Wonder WHY?

I blame the aeronautical industry for creating too many cool airplanes.....

Seriously though? I have way too many airplanes but each one was purchased for a reason..... "I wanted to have a bad-ass 3d plane" "I wanted to try float flying" "I wanted something for formation flying with a buddy" "I had never tried a jet"....... maybe they are justifications (ok they are almost certainly justifications) but each new plane usually has meant I was expanding my skills in some fashion, or at least I intended to.

Lately though..... I've just been coveting high end stuff lol

Re: Ever Wonder WHY?

My reasoning is just that the desire to "create" never goes away, I guess I just need to start crashing more.

Re: Ever Wonder WHY?

I have wondered that a few times "why did I buy this kit?" gets asked in my head a few times, I answer outloud because of all the ca sniffing, "it looks cool and i like seeing something go from a bunch of sticks in a box to a bare airframe to a flying RC plane.

just me, again there has been alot of ca and dope sniffing during my hobby time... perhaps they put something in it that makes us addictive so we just have to build more and more and more.

Re: Ever Wonder WHY?

As far as building goes, and why we do it, for a lot of us, it is an itegeral part of the hobby. I know I am dating myself when I say that when I started in this great game, there was no such thing as an "ARF". If you wanted to fly, you built or bought someone else's creation.
On the other hand, out here on the flats, summer, such as we had this year, is short, and winter is long. If I didn't build, I'd go stir crazy!
On top of that, there is always the thinning out of the fleet due the ground rising up and smacking my planes.
Damn, I love the smell of glue in the afternoon!

Re: Ever Wonder WHY?

I think it is in our genes. I asked my mom if I had always been like this and she said I always liked to be surrounded by toys. Lately I think the always expanding fleet has something to do with better skills at flying and normaly when I crash its a plane I am fond of and my repairing skills have improved too. Maybe in a few years they will find the gene responsible for this attraction to rcs. And when they do I hope they figure out how to stimulate it in my wife so she will let me get more toys. Lately she has expressed concern over how my models just keep getting larger.

Re: Ever Wonder WHY?

Good question.

Like others, I had no choice when I started in this hobby but really, I enjoy building as much as flying.

Yeah, I do buy 'n fly ARFs but they don't give me near the 'jangle' I get when I fly something I've invested a few winters on.

The last few years, it's been very therapeutic to me. My day job has me living in a complex virtual world, it's rewarding to work on something tangible and see real results rather than some performance dashboard that rates my work as 'green', 'yellow' or 'red' in several categories of sometimes seemingly arbitrary measurement.

Not many of us left that I can see, I'm afraid a lot of skills are being lost to the cad/cam laser cut hot glue and shelf paper factories. Exchanging ideas and skills, observing others work and asking how they managed it used to be the hobby social circle, these days it seems to be a marketers paradise with most discussions relating new products and depth of wallet.
