Hi John,
What a great Topic !
I know where it is taking me.... !

My first thoughts of a 'rudder' was to turn chuck gliders back to me, so I didn't have to chase them so far.
Then rudder became a 'gizmo' to build on my towline gliders, so I could tow them up straight into the wind, then let them gently spiral down.
Then rudder had to deal with the torque of many wound up rubber bands. This still bamboozles me, and after many, many tries, I will still try to master it...

But a Cox.049 showed up. And a CG Swordsman 18 C/L kit.
It was revolutionary (very bad pun intended!)
At 12 yrs old, we had competing 'gangs' , riding our 'Mustang' bikes...terrorizing with our noise, every schoolyard we could get away with. So cool, some of us even had 'girls' who could start/pit a Cox Golden Bee !
The power went up(.35), wire lines to 60ft... and then cops showed up.(It was before mufflers !) The rudder was there, to keep the planes out on the lines.

Then a 'cheap' Heathkit radio on 72 came along. I got it built, swearing that I would not ever, ever solder again.
(the 'tiny' servos back then are HUGE to todays' standard!)

It was a single stick Tx.
With the twist knob rudder, I was cool, even natural...

I am left handed. With a mode 2 Tx I am still uncomfortable with my left hand on thr/rudd.
After +35 yrs?
I can manage, but I need to 'think' about Rudder...

Oh Yeah...
The 'Rudder' in my above story...

Is my Dad, going on 80...

Take care,
Have fun,

Regrets? Maybe not taking up RC sooner. I was plane crazy when I was a kid and sure is nice to be going backwards into my childhood
