Question Airbrushing Monocote Covered Plane

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Question for the experts;
Hi Guys
My son has a monocote covered FW190. He wants to airbrush the plane.

1. Can he lightly sand the monocote so the paint adheres better???

2. What type of paint should he use for the camoflage paint scheme??

3. Does he need to apply a clear cote over the camo to protect it from the fuel??

Would really appreciate your help.
Thx, Tom

Re: Airbrushing Monocote Covered Plane

i do alot of airbrushing myself
i wouldnt sand the mono coat . i would just clean it good with a wax and grease remover
i would use a product called autoair
most airbrush paints are waterborne so it would have to be clear coated

Re: Airbrushing Monocote Covered Plane

Hi Tom,

I have not painted monocote, but...

I've learned how to paint coro plastic...

-use acetone to clean/wipe any oils etc. away.
-a very light 'scuff' with 220 grit sandpaper helps.
-a very light coat of grey/brown cheap rattle can automotive primer. This gets your paint to stick to the plastic.
-use exterior latex/acrylic house paint. SemiGloss works best for me. Thin it down to 2%Milk consistency with windshield washer fluid.
-I find 2+ light coats brushed on the easiest.
-I have airbrushed latex several times. A bit 'tricky' to fiddle with, more 'blotchy' than enamels, but nice to play with... (I love the cleanup with water !)

The 'trick' is...DO NOT wipe any raw fuel spilled on it.
Let it air dry. Later, there will be a slight 'oil stain'. Regular Windex cleaning will clean it up after flying.

Clearcoats are very hard to repair...

Hope this helps...
Good luck,

Take care,
Have fun,
