Painting plastic film

Does anyone have a handle on how to best paint plastic film on ARF models? I want to change some colours on a new plane and the paint job is gloss so the undercoat has to be perfect. Flat paint jobs are a lot more forgiving of sanding marks in the undercoat. Any ideas?

Re: Painting plastic film

Try a little steel wool, lightly scuffing the surface of the plastic, so that the new paint will adhere better. Make sure you vacuum the surface as well as ensuring there is no grease or oil on the surface.

Re: Painting plastic film

Also, make sure you don't rough up the surface to much to create a fuzz like surface. If you see this then you need to remive the covering and start over. Once your happy with the prepped surface blow, sand, then wash the surface with isopropal alcohol in a lint free cloth. this will remove any finger oils and contaminants from the surface. Rich Urivitch did an article in M.A.N. a couple of years back on colour changing your ARF. It's a good read.

Thanks guys. I'll practise on a "less than perfect" wing that was involved in an overzealous attempt at a very low level pass.
