Re: 2010 Recap

Visited the flying field 68 times - had 201 flights with one crash that was my stupid fault. (a nice 50 cc gasser that I purchased used) Put together a Pilot R/C Yak 54 30 cc gasser (ARF) and had 17 flights with it before the field and I closed for the season. Purchased a used, Futaba T12 FGA 2.4 transmitter from a very nice man in Ottawa over RC Canada and converted my planes (I only have 3 following a significant inventory reduction over the past 2 years) to 2.4. Extremely pleased with how this conversion went and was able to get rid of all my old radio equipment. Served as secretary-treasurer of one the R/C clubs that I am a member of. . . A good year by my standards - will enjoy our Flying Farmers Christmas get together this Saturday night. Cheers. . . .

Re: 2010 Recap

I had an "odd" summer. After working every summer since I was 12 yrs old, I had my first "summer holiday" this past year. I sold my woodworking business in Kirkland Lake early in the year, and took off most of the summer from June on...

As for flying, the new club I belong to in Timmins is only 10 minutes from the house. I did a lot of flying relatively speaking (most of the time, 2 or 3 trips to the field weekly) and concentrated mainly on jets, getting two smaller EDF models flying, and also finishing off a Reaction R54, an older Kangaroo, and building an AD Scorpion later in the season. I burned the most kerosene ever, this season, and had several dozen excellent flights with no accidents or trouble at all. A great summer for jets, my best yet since I started in 2002!

I also flew a lot of my older planes that I havent flown in years, a lot of 1/2A stuff, my sig Wonder and a few other .15/.20 size.

I got back into Helicopters after a 7 year hiatus - first with a Trex 500, and then building a Radikal (and later on in the season a 2nd Radikal as well as a Trex 250 for indoor).

Made it to Whingham jets, an EDF rally in Ottawa, the Sault's new field opening and of course the Timmins fun fly. Was dissapointed I missed a few other events I would have liked to go to, but you cant do everything, especially when you live a day's drive to anything major.

The biggest things for me was finally buying a new property for my shop in Timmins, a 5 acre property with a 6000 sq ft metal building (bought in August) that is currently undergoing a full renovation into a woodworking shop. Hopefully in two more weeks, right before the year's end, I will have all my machinery delivered and soon after wired up, etc and I can start getting back to work.

I also got back into kit building (after several years of ARF's only) and have plans to build 3 or 4 planes this winter.

But the most exciting was finally finding out that not only are we having our first child, but everything is going well, health wise and hopefully in the new year I become a dad.

2010 was pretty exciting But 2011 is shaping up to be even more so!

The combat planes we were building are an evolved version of the Sat. night special from SPAD to the bone website.
There a 4mm coro fuse with a bit of square down spout at the front for the motor mount/fuel tank area, and a 4' 4mm bottom/2mm top wing with a conv tail and stab with no rudder.
simple and tough, for anything from a .25 to .46 glow motor.

Re: 2010 Recap

I went flying this summer for the first time in nearly 14 years, dusted off my Sig Clipped Wing Cub and got it airborne, felt pretty good. I built a Midwest Aerostar to help sharpen up my skills but I didn't manage to get it into the air.

Started building a Great Planes Extra 300 kit and also working on a Goldberg Extra 300 kit, plan on finishing a Sig 4 Star 120 that I quit working on about 1996 or so. Should have lots of planes ready to go next year.
