Yeah, one guy set a record of 38km from home with only 200mW 5.8GHz vTx a couple months ago. Used a cloverleaf antenna on the plane, and a 8 turn helical antenna on the receiver. They key is: having antennas precisely tuned to the frequency, and your range is compounded
I find I get better video quality from my 200mW 5.8 systems than from my 1000mW 1.3 system. But I do get better penetration with the 1.3 due to it being a lower frequency, mostly, not because of the power. I use custom made antennas for all of them.
At under a few km, I don't see the need for directional antennas, though. Nicer to just use omnis, though I have diversity and will run a directional just in case. But the beam is narrow and you have know where to fly to maintain reception. I have not gone for pan/tilt tracking yet.
