Info on Batteries

Hello there,
I would like to ask you guys, what are the batteries you trust best? I know LiPo, NiMh and NiCd have all their +/- side... but in your experience and knowledge, what would you recommend for a boat?
Thanks for your attention.

Re: Info on Batteries

hi there from my own exp, i would say any lipo's with a high C rating as a boat will demand alot outta them alot like a heli 30+ c rating also i like to use hard case lipo's (better for water profing if conpartment isnt)

Re: Info on Batteries

Hello i8bvr2002,
Thanks for your reply. Sorry I didn't acknowledged it earlier.
I got at the end regular Ni Cad because Lipo's need the -far- more expensive charger and a lot of care...besides, I am working on a submarine and (as opposed as other models) every gram of ballast is welcome.

Re: Info on Batteries

You question is wide open. You didn't tell us what set-up you are talking about, so now we have to guess. So because we dont know, there there are 3 variables to consider

1) Is this for an electric boat or a nitro boat where you need a battery to power the RX?

If it is a Nitro boat, NiMh are the battery of choice for your RX. You can get them in much bigger capacities and they are a lot lighter than the equivalent Nicad of the same capacity

IF it is an ELECTRIC boat, then it depends on your motor/ESC set-up

2)If you have a brushed motor, then stick to NiCd or NiMh, NiMh being the preferred choice for reliability and capacity. If you have brushed motor and a modern ESC, you can use a Lipo battery, but most brushed ESC's dont have a cell-cut-off sensor on the ESC meaning you will ruin a lipo if you draw the power below 3.0V/Cell (most get ruined @<3.3V/cell because of overheating when they reach that point)

3)If you have a brushless motor, then it is Liop all the way. Modern brushless systems have votage-cut-off ESC's that will protect your Lipo battery.
