I'd read that it was a very successful design and made excellent power. Did you adapt an ecu or just experiment with mechanical settings manually to get ideal startup and sustained running?

I didnt fool around with trying to run the engine on the cheap. I purchased (at the time, pretty state of the art... now not so much) a GB Hobbies ECU which worked fine, and I still actually run an old RAM 750 with it right now. But it is very simple to fit any modern ECU (that uses either a magnet/sensor or infrared LED/diode rpm sensor, and thermocouple for EGT) to the KJ66.

At the time, I purchased some parts from ABC microturbines in the UK, no longer in business. I know a Swiss fellow still sells 66mm turbine wheels, the proper KKK turbocharger compressor wheel and other parts are available from various places. You do need a decent lathe accurate to at the bare minimum 1/2 thousandth, be able to lap fit bearings to a shaft, cut left hand threads and of course do some silver brazing and spot welding. And drill and tap a lot of holes. All the engines I built and balanced, or repaired and re balanced ran well enough for many hours, with my simple home balance job. But you have to be patient and do it as best you can, which takes some time and practice. Its not hard to do but its not easy either, if that makes sense.

if its got a wing or two and an engine - I like it!

Re: homemade Jet Engines

Still got all three of those books and was in the process of building one from scratch when my turbine partner passed away. We were gonna use spent propane bottles for the body, parts from a Dodge turbo, and a program we found for my CNC machine to machine the turbine wheels here...but never got around to it... and that was 11 years ago...with the prices coming down drastically and the safety of the new ones...found it just isn't worth it now.
