Re: Cause of crashes?

Well, I voted mechanical failure but, since I'm the maintenance dude, it's still my fault.

I've had many dumb thumbs (mostly when practicing a new maneuver), several servo failures, a couple battery failures, a few mid-airs etc. but, I'd have to say the most surprising to me was when I was warming up the thumbs prior to a quickie race and, on landing, I ran into the safety cage that had just been drug out on to the field while I was flying.... I kept starting at the cage not believing it was there.... I still recall how dumbfounded I was (and how disappointed I was that I would be missing the race).

Re: Cause of crashes?

100% of my crashes were the fault of the "NUT" holding the stick, weather in the shop or at the field.

Re: Cause of crashes?

In the past I can't remember how many times I have heard "I've been hit" as a heavy wing loaded aircraft tip stalls into a death spiral to its demise,,,,,,,,Now that I run a 2.4 only club, that phrase is virtually non exsistant and its all about the pilot/builder.........personally for me, its been trying to hard to have fun and learning/practising stuff less than one mistake high.....

Re: Cause of crashes?

I chose Mechanical. I did tend to overpower alot my planes earlier on, before I conceided and realized I needed to upgrade or strengthen certain areas/parts.

Wanting to fly 3' off the deck all the time..Im sure has also contributed to more than one crash

That's me! Even when it is mechanical/electrical failure it's because I failed to check something. (I even have a CHECKLIST that I miss things on!)

Re: Cause of crashes?

All four crashes were with the same plane...the H9 Spitfire... and all related to the gear not coming out or collapsing or field too rough to stop the nose over...although trying to dump the gear by jerking it before landing in Chatham with the stripped servo in a quite stiff wind caused it to pancake at the runway...since rebuilt and ready for 2010...I've cycled that dang thing 20 times...but I'll bet one pothole at the field will do it in again.Don't take much to knock it back and not let it go back into the wing and strip another servo unless I gouge a giant hole in the wing.LOL.

..or maybe go to Robarts...?

Re: Cause of crashes?

Here's a great when I was learning.
Flying a white plane on a grey and cloudy day...loss of orientation.
It's kinda boring for the first 3 minutes.
