Saskatchewan Paint Problem

So I'm pretty sure I screwed up. I'm Building a Lanier Stinger 40 from kit and I painted the plastic parts to match my red covering. Problem is I used krylon plastic paint. Looks great but I forgot about fuel compatability. As it turns out it isn't fuel proof. Now What??? Is there a fuel proof laquer or something to cover the paint I already have? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Paint Problem

Hello Martin:

I believe that Top Flight sells a clear in a rattle can. You might also try Flecto Varathane in a rattle can. It's not 100% fuel proof, but more fuel resistant. It should hold up unless you drip raw fuel on the surface and then only if it's left on for a period of time and/or if you're using a nitro content fuel higher than 10%. Plus, the varathane needs to dry for a considerable period of time (like more than a month). At any rate, do a test piece and see how well it holds up.

Re: Paint Problem

Be patient, some paints take several week to really harden. Yo can use Varathane ( water based ) to clear coat the paint. After drying about a week it is reasonably " fuel resistant". Keep in mind that you seldom spill much raw fuel on the cowl, most of the guck from glow engines is oil.
The only thing that I have found that is " fuel proof " is Epoxy. You could thin some epoxy with isopropyl alcohol and and cover the paint with that.

Re: Paint Problem

I painted a P47 that I camoed with Krylon paint then went over it with a clear off the shelf clear laquer and it is holding up well. Test the laquer on the paint on a separate surface to make sure it does not wrinkle. This was on Solartex fabric. Good Luck Larry
