First Flight of the New Year

GAD! Is it already near the end of March?

Have to admit this winter has not been the best for flying. Last and only flights on skis this winter was on New Years Eve. Seems the only time the weather cooperated I was at work! The rest of the time I was shovelling snow or the wind was gusting 35+.

Anyway, took time from the Harvard to finally make it to the field this afternoon, (to be honest my friend embarrased me into going). Had a boo at the Skybolt and Harvard II, (PC9) and found a few issues with the 'Bolt. Spent last evening fixing those and replacing the stiff wire tailwheel rig with one that has spring suspension and steering. Much more civilized taxi and takeoff behavior now.

Harvard II was first off the ground and as this was it's second flight I was reminded of how bloody fast this is! Just switched to a 3-blade prop. Looks much better and hopefully will slow it down and retain the vertical performance.

The 'Bolt was more familiar, but the first landing was not the best. Not good to try something new with so long a hiatus. I did have a 3-point landing, but it consisted of the mains and prop hub!

Thought it was a good idea to get some bipe time as my friend showed up with his Christen Eagle for me to maiden. As I posted on my Harvard thread the takeoff was a bloody eye opener. From roll start to wheels off took no more than 15-20'. For an 8lb bipe I was impressed, to say the least. Almost sorry I sold him the OS 65 now. In fact, it surprised us both so much my friend kind of flubbed the video of the takeoff. I do have one of the landing and my recommendations for work are limited to adding to the low rate aileron setting and perhaps yank that motor out and installing the Saito 65.

Here's some pics of the Harvard II, including one with the new 3-bladed prop. Hope you like the crew names!.
