Question about Rx pack charging

Hi folks,

Got a d'oh moment question to ask you all. Can you use a stock Nicad radio charger *ie* NEC 221 stock charger for JR sport radios* be used for charging NI-MH batteries? *ie JRsport 1500mAh rx pack.*

Re: Question about Rx pack charging

I attempted to determine the Rx output of the JR NEC 221 standard charger, but I don't have one. I have a NEC 222 with an output of 120 mah which would charge an NiMH battery with an extended charge time. I would monitor at hourly intervals the charge voltage until it plateaued and went down slightly (or crudely, determined when the pack got warm) in order to determine if it was fully charged. For example, the voltage could max out at 5.70 volts and then drop to 5.67 volts in the next hour of charging and the pack would feel slight warm. However, I usually discharge the pack after flying to determine the charge left to determine how many flights I can do safely. Too many variables.....

Re: Question about Rx pack charging

JR Transmitter/Receiver Charger,500-700mAh NEC-221
Type: TX and RX wall charger Input: 120V 60 Hz AC # Cells: 8 for the TX, 4 for the RX Charge Rate: 50 mA for TX and RX Output

I would not use this charger on a regular basis. 50MA is too low to property peak a 1500nimh battery in my experience.
Good chargers can be had for little money these days.

Re: Question about Rx pack charging

I have done quite a bit of NmHi battery charging. If you use the NICAD rule, one tenth the capacity for twelve hours, the NmHi battery will get very hot when fully charged. Around one twentieth the capacity for 24 hours is ok and they only get slightly warm when full. I have used the standard 50 ma chargers to charge the NmHi batteries, but you have to leave them on for days. If you do a normal four to six flights in your daily flying session, your normal charger will be good enough to top the battery up. Caution some of the Futaba chargers do not out out enough voltage to completely recharge the battery.

Re: Question about Rx pack charging

NiCds don't charge very well at much less than C/10 but apparently NiMHs manage better but of course, it takes far too long. But as S1Pitts says, there are many inexpensive chargers out there now; even on RCC you may get a more suitable one.

Re: Question about Rx pack charging

Ken is right. This JR charger's Rx output is far too low to effectively charge the NiMH pack. Get another charger, preferably one that is programmable, automatic, and with a much higher output.
