3D Engine?

Hey guys, planning on purchasing a Phoenix Extra 330s 60 size for aerobatic and 3D purposes(duh). I want hovering ability and decent pull outs. Ive been looking at thunder tiger four strokes and all sorts of 2 strokes. I just have no experience with 4 strokes but know they sound awesome and as a rule have more torque. anyway, does thunder tiger have a good reputation and what size would get the job done? thanks.

Re: 3D Engine?

The advantage of four strokes is they can swing larger props. That larger column of air means better low speed performance, so 3D would likely benefit.

I have only run Saito and OS and for the same size and specced power rating the Saito just feels stronger. They have a higher compression ratio and are nasty at throwing props if leaned too far, but once you have it dialed in they run strong and consistently. The thing to remember with these is they are much slower to respond to mixture setting changes, so you have to be patient when tweaking the mixture.

If you decide to stick with 2-strokes look for a bearing engine as hard 3D can stress a bushed crank to where it wipes the oil and allows scuffing.
I know there's money in aviation........I put it there!

Re: 3D Engine?

I've flown 3-D with both and feel the 4 strokes give you more room for error, something you will appreciate when first starting into this type of flying. The larger props and big torque will literally fly you out of trouble well after you may have missed recognizing it.
Mount as big a 4 stroke that you can afford. Even a rich running big block 4 stroke will pull hard.

Re: 3D Engine?

That settles it at 4 stroke. I like the sound alot better anyway. I really would love a saito 100 or something close to it, they just seem quite expensive but sounds like ill benefit from it. also Ive really only had tuning experience with a nitro savage truck, which are pretty sensitive to needle turning. I should be alright since Ive got a few cousins 10+ years in the hobby. thanks for the advice

Re: 3D Engine?

I Highly reccomend a saito, they need a tiny bit of adjustment while breaking in, but once broken in you can set it rich and forget about it. I ran a saito .91 for about 6 years and after initial break-in (5 tanks of fuel) i didnt have to touch the needle valve once.

A properly adjusted 4 stroke will smoke a tiny bit throughout the throttle settings... I always tuned mine by smoke, not by rpm, sound, or otherwise. as long as it runs and it is smokin, it will run forever.
