Most of the ESCs I've had quit was because the BEC circuit burned out, usually with smoke. Had one bipe go when it looked like a WW1 got shot down. Nice trail of smoke on the way down.
Tried for my kamikazi pilots licence. Flunked the test.

Maybe. If any components overheat to failure, there is a chance that other components will be affected as well. If you want to be absolutely certain, use a separate BEC.
