The below information is based on my understanding of electronics and motors and not necessarily fact based.

While the 2 posts were definately worth the read.. one was vague and the other strayed from topic. I assume we all know how a brushless electric motor works (at least enough to follow me). Timing is really the ESC trying to anticipate the best time to energize the next set of windings. Since there are no sensors in airplane motors (that I know of, I could be wrong, don't bother flaming me), the ESC pulses the windings at a rate that should correspond to rpm, the only way it can adjust timing is to essentially guess at when the next phase change will be required. Because of the fact that one ESC can run sooooo many different motors and it really can't tell which one you have, they put manual timing adjustability in for motors with more poles, more kv, etc, etc. The number of poles and speed of the motor (magnetism fields have a set speed) will affect the timing required fto induce the next magnetic field to get the best performance/efficiency out of the motor. So as other people have stated, the only way to know what's best is to try different settings if something doesn't feel right. I think that most motors will run fine with default settings, but I have a low KV motor that did require some adjustment or it would occasionally run backwards... (handy eh?)
