Large Scale Warbird Battery Set-Up

I'm currently building a Top Flite giant Corsair and assembling a Top Flite Giant P47 ARF.

As recommended I'm installing 2 separate batteries (6V @2700Mah) for the receiver and a separate battery (4.8 v @2700Mah) for the gas engine ignition.

The questions are:

- do I need a separate charge jack for each battery or can I parallel charge the 2 receiver batteries? These are both NiMh batteries.

- what charger are folks using to charge batteries in large scale airplanes? I'm hoping to purchase 1 charger to charge all 3 batteries.

I've been flying 40 and 60 glo size aircraft for some time so large scale in a completely new world for me so any experienced suggestion would be appreciated.

Re: Large Scale Warbird Battery Set-Up

It's best to use separate charge jacks for the receiver packs so that you can monitor the charging/cycling of each pack - that way if something goes wrong, you'll know which pack has the problem.

You can use a switch like this that has built in charge jacks for 2 packs -

As for a charger - it's probably best to get a charger that has at least 3 separate "ports" and doesn't have a "common ground". Also, make sure it can charge newer battery chemistries (Li-Ion, LiFe/A123s).

This charger works very well:

It has 4 independant ports and charges all the new chemistries.

Let me know if you have any other questions,

Re: Large Scale Warbird Battery Set-Up

Grizak is correct in recommending you isolate your two batteries.

Not only do you want to keep them separate to monitor their condition and prevent one bad issue from affecting both packs, but there is a more critical reason: If you tie the two together they are not only electrically bonded, but any noise injected into the source for the gas ignition will now go through to the radio system. Basically you have simply paralleled the battery packs and then sent them directly to the radio and engine the same as if you had one single pack.
I know there's money in aviation........I put it there!
