Re: Carden PRO Built by Lee

Very Creepy! Well I had a most productive day as my two best flying buds (sorry Craig, but if you lived here it would be three) Kent and Brendan braved the coldest day of the year (minus 25 windchill outside) to help me set the incidences on my plane
Both batteries on our incidence meters died (dont like cold obviously!) so went back to my tried and true Robart regular and my digital level plus three others plus a laser level!
First pic shows the setup sorta because it was too cold to set up for pretty pics.
I zeroed the fuse all around first then placed one panel on and got that zeroed and place some balsa blocks at the te so it cant move. If you go to FG and read BBW (Built by Walt) the process is the same)

Re: Carden PRO Built by Lee

Next step is to drill the anti rotation pin location. I use a long drill bit through pilot holes that I made so that the pin is parallel to the wing tube. That way when the wing is placed on, the pin goes straight in. The wing bolt holes get drilled using a right angle drill and they are parallel to the sides, not the wing tube so that the bolts are square to the hardpoints in the fuse. I am using threaded inserts in the wing and 8/32 bolts go into these inside the fuse.
If using threaded bolts that are permanently inset in the wing root, you would make these parallel to the fuse phenolic like the anti rotation pin, but I dont like threaded rods projecting from my wing roots for various reasons.

The second panel gets setup relative to the first and was checked at the te with the laser before drilling all the holes.

The stabs are aligned relative to the wings so everything comes out perfect. For sh..s and giggles I then measured from the stab le to the wing te and these were within 1/16 of each other, so I know I'm square too!

Later I will add the treadserts, anti rotation pins and do some final trial fitting then its onto the vertical fin and rudder.

Re: Carden PRO Built by Lee

I still think it was colder inside the garage than it was outside. Just look at the picture of Kent, and he was in by the heater. My feet are still numb today.

Glad we could help out Lee. Amazing job so far.

Can't wait to see the covering begin.

Re: Carden PRO Built by Lee

Making good progress. Got the wings le and te on and shaped, rudder cut and vertical fin glued on today. The top turtledeck will go on tomorrow and then starting on the canopy hatch. Things going fast now
These pics show an airbleed hole in one wing so the wings can go on easily (nearly impossible without one) I drilled a 1/16 hole near the end of the phenolic and used a piece of nyrod outer sheath to the skin surface aligned with an awl.
The next few show the wing with the shorter aileron and how nice the servo boxes look when recessed and the sheeting just removed. Well I think it looks good!

Re: Carden PRO Built by Lee

The last pics show two servo locations but I willonly use one and cover over the other and see if needed. These pics show the vert stab aligned with a laser level (thanks Heinz) and the turtledeck ready to fit once the glue dries. Question Trev, are you glassing the stab or adding additional reinforcement before the deck goes over the joint?

Looks great Lee!!

No need for glassing or reinforcement... the t-deck basically adds a massive triangular gusset once in place!! You'd snap the vertical stab in two above the turtledeck before ever loosening this joint!! In addition, you have a 3/4" stiffener as your bevelled hingeline stock!
