I have 2 JR/Spektrum Radios that were serviced in the last year. All from stuff I screwed up. Both were fixed and turned around quickly with only a nominal cost (I think it was 12 bucks my cost). It makes sense that they would update the software while they had it in their possession. "Silent Upgrade" makes sense. To date I have never had a problem with any of my radios. Perhaps the servicing also raised their level of reliability.
