I made this thing about a 100 yrs ago.........Would you take, back in the 60s, as Maxwell Smart would say Still use it regularly. It's the backside of a #11 ground out with the trusty Dremel. Try it, you'll like it. For the bugger ones I do use the electric ones, also the Robart Hinge points. Ain't it nice we have all these choices.

Re: hinge slots

I have been using a V tool for cutting my hinge slots and have been happy with the results. My only complaint is that the tool set I got, Dubro, seems to bend/distort quite easily. Does anyone know of or have suggestions for another make that is more durable?

Great Planes Slot Machine....... I used to just LOATHE cutting out slots. Took forever, and was just a PITA. Now I can do all the slots on a .60 size plane in about ten minutes. Done about ten builds in the last two years and still on my first set of blades..... John

Re: hinge slots

Thanks for all the replies. I think I would like to try one of those slot machines.

Anyone have one they would like to part with?

Again thanks to all

Re: hinge slots

I also agree with the GP slot machine. I actually almost gave up on a build when it came to hinge time, after i started and recalled the frustrations i had with cutting them by hand. Then when i was at my LHS saw the machine bought it and no looking back at all. works great and takes the pain out of the hinges.

Re: hinge slots

I use C/A hinges even for my largest airplanes. It is quite easy to cut a slot in the balsa trailing edge that a C/A hinge will slide right into with no problem.

Just a drop or two of thin C/A and you have a permanent hinge that is hard to break and will last the life time of the plane.

Re: hinge slots

About 12yrs ago or longer i was making hinge slots with an #11 knife blade when the knife slipped and sliced 2 fingers .I was told i should of had stitches in 1 of the fingers from a friend who was a nurse.Needless to say when the great planes hinge slot machine came on the market i purchased one right away.It works great and that's what i use.
