I'd like to keep the cost under $1000. And I've decided to only use my GoPro on this first copter since it's my first attempt at hover photography.

I still haven't received any solid 'for sale' offers.

Still waiting.....

You could build a nice quad for less then $500. Lots of frames available. HobbyKing has a good selection of motors/esc's and batteries. Add the Paris plug and play flight controller and your all set to give multi-coptors a go.

Re: Quadcopter/Multicopter

Ray, I checked out your web site and photos and I am a little concerned about your expectations. How do you intend to fly this rig - traditionally or by video (FPV)? If traditional, then you'll be limited to flying quite close to yourself so that you don't lose orientation (very easy to do with a multicopter). If FPV, the learning curve is quite steep and the costs can easily exceed your $1000 target.

I built my own tricopter for FPV based on RC Explorer's design. I was inspired by his terrific videos. The frames really aren't complicated to make and you can get the motors, ESCs and flight controller from Hobbyking for under $100. He has a full build log. Building my own frame allows me to build my own spares as required so that I can get back in the air quickly after a crash. I'm finding learning to fly FPV is many ways is like learning to fly all over again. I am using a GoPro HD and the Hobbyking Quad Controller ($25).

If FPV video is your objective, you might consider fixed wing (such as the Multiplex EasyStar) as an alternative. Such aircraft are generally easier to fly FPV (they always move forward in flight), but they are better suited to video (multicopters are better for close-in and tight places).

Re: Quadcopter/Multicopter

FYI to anyone that may be looking for an OpenPilot CC board for their multicopter...I've been working with the OP project team and will be getting a small portion of boards from their next production batch that is due in a few weeks allocated for distribution in Canada. I've posted info on the website http://www.------------- or you can also check on the OpenPilot site and forums for more info - http://forums.openpilot.org/
