Thank-You Bill.
Also as to Brents original post. Spring and Fall can produce tremendous thermals. Think of a few days just this past fall, +2* going to +16*, or more by early afternoon. These are the conditions that can create boomers, also sink. Darn schedule prevented the ability to take advantage of them. But those days are very dear to the farming community as well.

Make hay while the thermal gods watch, or something like that.

Re: Fall Thermals

My shelterbelt seems to be offering my best lift. Thankfully it is west (towards the predominant breeze) and not towards that low white ball in the sky.

Three days in a row, at about the same time, temp, and breeze (we don't call it wind until its over 60 km/hr) and what a differance in the flights. Two days you could hunt for lift and find some small bubbles. The other day it was just constant sticking to maintain a position or a heading.

Gotta love flyin' the wing! Yes, and even some inverted flight!

Re: Fall Thermals

Two of us were out flying yesterday and it was fantastic! I had a 22 minute thermal flight on my first launch. It was supposed to be an ALES round but the lift was so good I could not bring myself to leave it at 9 min. We had 4 more rounds and between us had another 6 ten minute maxes! All of this from a 150m launch and on the shortest day of the year!! Temp was at +5*C and calm winds with lots of sunshine and blues skies.

I love winter flying on Vancouver Island!!

Altitude trace attached. Murray is flying his new Bird of Time very well - as usual with all his planes I might add!

Re: Fall Thermals

I got in 2 power flights and a e-glider flight yesterday. Unlike the Island it was -5, 85% humidity, and a 20 click breeze. This all made for cool hands, that a Prairie Dawg who isn't used to humid cold suffered.

The interesting thing was the lift was ok, the plane flew steady (as opposed to sea-sawing and porposing) BUT, no matter how I trimmed it, I was losing ground (flying slowly backwards) without changing altitude.
