Wing Tube sizing

I am getting ready to start a 25% Sukhoi partially based on a set of plans that I got from RCM ages ago. I built the plane way back when and it came in around 14 pounds with a Quadra 42 for power. I plan on using a 30cc engine and carbon fiber landing gear, so those two changes alone will save me 2 pounds, so my upper weight will be around 12 pounds with a target of 10 to 11 pounds.

My question is: What size wing tubes are used in the 30cc sized planes? I have a 1" CF tube which I believe will be strong enough but I am curious as to what is used in the ARF's of similar size.

Re: Wing Tube sizing

Hi Paul i use a 1"inch x31" aluminum tube.I like the aluminum tube because it's strong slightly more weight than carbon fibre. But i have read some articles of the fibre ones breaking.I use mine in a katana 25% This is an arf.

Re: Wing Tube sizing

1 inch will be more than enough.
1 inch tubes are in 50cc planes.

Make sure you do a build thread

Re: Wing Tube sizing

Thanks for the info..that is exactly what I was looking for.

The area that wing tubes are weakest in is the point loading that you get at the fuse to wing root. I have seen several aluminum wing tubes bend at that point and I was worried that the carbon fiber would split/shatter on an overload. Mind you all the tube failures have been the result of a crash.

I plan on a build thread once I get going. I have another model to get finished first.
