Re: email from MAAC

I just did a whois on the IP address - not the advertised domain name, and came up with Internet Services, Inc.
Houston, TX.

I'm guessing it wasn't a legit email from anyone at maac.

Since the domain and ip address whois conflict I'm assuming it's somebody using a proxy and neither is actually right. Most likely somebody got a mailing list from MAAC and is seeing what'll bounce back and what won't.

Re: email from MAAC

Domain registration info and IP address Whois are two separate things.

You can register a domain name with a registrar, but that domain name is not linked to any particular IP.

When you have a web site, you point your domain name to the web site host provider, who provides the IP. That IP is usually registered to the host provider.

Take my web site for example. It is hosted by a service in California. If you look at the headers of an email that came from me, you would see it originating from my computer at home, which has an IP provided by my ISP, going through my web site host, which has their own IP, and onwards. Each IP owned by separate entities, none of which is me. All I own is the domain name.

The upshot is that one should not assume that there might be something going on because the domain registration does not match the IP registration.

Re: email from MAAC

Thanks Jim ..... I think you have just re-stated what I pointed out way back in post #13 (just based on looking quickly at the headers of 1 (one) email ) ..... and without even bringing who the hosting service is into the discussion ..... bottom line ... a pro hacker will leave a trail of misguiding infromation ..... if it's a legitimate mailing you can more or less track where it came from ..... because they would have no need to hide ....

I'll say it again .... email addys have been harvested ..... why they pick on MAAC as the orginator ... I don't know ..... just delete it and move on ..... this #&$% goes on every day .... there is no MAAC conspiracy here .... surely most people have better things to worry about than junk mail .....
