The Rideau RC Flyers are looking into making or acquiring a PA system for 2012 and I thought it would be a good idea to see what solutions other other clubs have come up with.

Here's our requirements and ideas for now - still developing concepts.

It needs to be portable & powerful enough to reach a 200 person crowd dispersed around the speaker(s) up to about 200 ft away. We need to bring it out for events and put it away the rest of the time. Ideally we would have self-powered units. Power capacity would have to be sufficient for at least 8 hrs use.

Inspiration: http://www.pyleaudio.com/sku/PCMX265...And-Aux-Inputs

Do we really need two speaker units? Maybe one sufficiently-powerful self-powered unit would do. Maybe two units with one slaved to the other could provide a wireless, self-powered, multi-speaker solution. The power source need not be battery - could be an extension cord from the clubhouse (AC source).

Ideally it would be in a rugged case with lifting handles (maybe wheels) and on some feet that gets it off of wet grass. The speaker(s) might be on tripod(s) or some kind of stand that gets them about 3 or 4 feet off the ground.

A wireless mic will be the best solution to eliminate wire cost, tripping hazard & inconvenient location near the amp.

For IMAC freestyle & a 2 -cabinet solution, They would be placed about 40 ft. apart near the flight-line fence. They could not be tall enough to obstruct they pilot's view for landings & take-offs. They have to be close enough to the flight line so the pilot can hear the music. Pilots complained last year that they could not hear their own music. We might need to consider a smaller monitor speaker pair at the flight line facing out towards the field, while the main set face the crowd. A good solution would be to have a speaker cabinet that had main speaker on one side and smaller speaker on the back side. Or maybe a wireless headphone set for the pilot?? (Assuming they'd be willing to wear it. )

For other events, it/they could be placed closer to the clubhouse. They'll be used for announcements.

So . . . I'd love to hear what other clubs have done.

Re: Event PA systems

Why not rent when they need it? I know we've done that for other uses and you'll get the expertise of the store without the cost. You'll also not have to worry if it dies the day of (as they most-likely have spares) and have to worry about storage or permanent insurance.
Current models: Hobbico Nexstar Electric, Parkzone Spitfire Mk IX , several micros/small helis. Nothing nitro/gas.

If you wish to buy...this is great 300 watt system...add some stands and a cheap dynamic mic...or rent to buy from Long &McQuade...very similar to mine i use at the club events...add a CD player to the extra channel...

We use the same one at our events. Its the best!

We also use the tripod-speaker stands that come with this kit. Having the speakers up at head-height really helps.
