Re: Trex 500 or 550

depend on how much room and how much you can afford to crash. i love my 500 but its a hotrod with a 2825 rpm head speed i love my 600 because of how smooth and stable the bigger heli is. one of the guys i fly with has a 550 and he killed it on his maiden because it was way faster than he was ready for. he rebuilding it and stretching it to a 600. but i think you will be happy with either one, or just buy both, it will happen eventually.

Re: Trex 500 or 550

I actually find the 550 the sweat spot for me in terms of helis over 450 in size. Both are good sizes though.

If you have the cash, the bigger the better. More visible, stable and easier to work upon.

Both will serve you well.

lol ...

I've owned both and the 550 is hands down a way nicer heli ... It's alot bigger then the 500 and it's very powerful and fast. Even by stretching heli, the darn thing was a rocket! Unfortunately I crashed it so bad that it was not worth repairing it

Re: Trex 500 or 550

I was thinking the same thing a month ago. I opted for the new 500v2 pro. I'm just waiting on a receiver before starting to build it. I own a 600n and a 450SE v2. It's quite a bit bigger than the 450, and should handle the elements quite easily. I don't think visibility will be that much of a factor. It's size in comparison is just about mid way between the 450 and the 600. I was also price driven by my decision and had a look at not only costs of decent electronics, but repair costs as well. Parts and electronics are not that much more than a 450, and substantially less than the 550. If your savvy with ebay (where I bought the kit and all electronics) you can save quite a bit of cash vs buying it from an over priced hobby store. The cost of lipo's for the 500 vs the 550 are also substantially less.
Thats my 2 cents. When I'm finished my build your welcome to try it out if you havn't already spent the money on something else.

Size matters, just ask the girls! Well in helis it does anyway. Bigger disk more stable. 550 all the way!

I was also contemplating the same thing when all I had was my Blade 400's. I went straight to the Trex 600. The stability is amazing but so was the price to build it with the nicest components I could find. I agree with the statements above. If you can afford it go with the 550 but if not a 500 whould be a nice bird. I started with ONE small heli a year ago and have 8 now. I have a good feeling a 500 or 550 will end up on my bench before 2012 is over.

Re: Trex 500 or 550

A 500 is 1700gr RTF while a 550 is 2800, almost double. The 500 can fly on 4S (very light and scale like) all the way to 6S (power to spare) depending on motor KV and gearing. Batteries are a lot cheaper, and the 500 comes off fairly well in minor crashes, (light weight). The 500 can be flown in a smaller space than 550, which is a big bird. 500 parts are very plentiful and cheap, I don't see a lot of 550 stuff in the shops. You can have 2 500's going (I have 3) for the cost of a 550. I think the 500 is a perfect size, fast, stable and very capable. I fly one on 600 size skids and canopy...very easy to see. No thoughts of going bigger.
