The landing gear a cub won't require any better solder than that is sold at CTC.

Without some precision testing procedures and control, you won't tell the difference on a cub landing gear, especially if you prep surface very well and use proper fluxes.

Marketing masters making you think you need something that you really don't.
Isn't that soldering just for the spring/scale style tensions wire on the landing and to hold the 2 sides together? the tie wire is really were the strength is, the solder just holds them in place? (going by memory here)

The best I've found for this kind of thing is 'Easy-Flo 45' - it's a 45% silver alloy, and mine is made by Lucas-Millhaupt. (Handy & Harman Company).

There are others in this range, different temps etc., for complex items.

I don't think I paid any more than around $20 for the roll in a plastic plastic pack - and there's more than enough there to do a bunch of landing gears!

Gordon this sounds very correct.
I remember paying about $17 at Acklands Grainger for a coil in a plastic container, about the size of a Snuss can. The flux is expensive, I found a discarded bottle on an industrial site.
A turbo tourch with propane will provide enough heat. Prep is everything! Sand, or file freashly before soldering.
As Les has said, Praxair etc. welding supply. Tell them what you are using it for they will set you up.
Hope this helps, -Dale-

Re: Silver Solder?

Hey guys, Thanks for all of the input. Interesting range of ideas and beliefs on the need for high silver content! I am inclined to go with the 45% Easy flo and the proper flux. If I can't find it locally I have found some online sources for the smaller quantities that I need. This is a big airplane and I never try to cheap out on a project that will take as much time and money as this scale project!
