Hk 500 Torque tube problems

Just received a new torque tube kit from Hobby King so I took it apart and checked it out. All looks good except the shaft was bent like a dogs leg. Pulled the shaft out and placed it in my lathe it was .200" out from end to end, this thing would have added a whole new set of vibrations. After about an hour I got the bend down to .005" and am now going to the locktite part of this upgrade. I also got a 4cell 4000MHA battery to try out I want a little more rpm for tail authority.

Re: Hk 500 Torque tube problems

I struggled with my hk 500 for a long time. It's undoubtedly the worst helicopter I've ever built, quality wise, particularly the tail section. In the end I replaced most of the parts with Align and it is now almost 80% a t rex (at a much higher cost....)

the plastic tail case has a very bad fit and the metal on the cnc case is too soft and will destroy itself in flight.

Pay particular attention to the mesh between the tail gear (under the main gear) and the gear that drives the torque tube -it is too loose. I had to elongate the frame holes that secure the plastic boom case in order to get the right mesh. It will strip the gears in flight if left unchecked.

Also, there are reports of the torque tube not being the right length (mine is the belt version and I had to resize the boom)

Good luck!

Re: Hk 500 Torque tube problems

Thanks for the tip I will pay close attention to the mesh at the main gear. I had a belt drive with it originally and I had to reduce the gear mesh then with some filing. My flying is very mild I like to fly scale so I would not be too hard on parts. I do plan on replacing parts with Align when replacement is needed the 500 is my favourite size so I don't mind the extra money on repairs.

Re: Hk 500 Torque tube problems

I have the HK500 (belt), and had many tail gear strip from the main gear. I figure it was a conbination ESC and Motor (too much torque). The ESC had a soft start, but not soft enough. It would only kick in at 20% throttle.
