Just bought a 60 size j3 cub with a 71'' wingspan, recommends a 46-52 motor. I have a 56 saito & i have a line on a new 65 saito, plane will be on floats, any recommendations? Thank you

Re: j3 cub engine

I fly my LT40 on floats 70" wingspan. Performes very well with my Saito 65. I have owned 3 X 65, and 2 X 56 Saito's. In my opinion they are equal in power output. But I do prefer the 65 if weight is not an issue (it won't be).
Only my opinion from experiance (4th LT40, someone always talks me into selling them!)

Hope this helps,

Re: j3 cub engine

I had a kit built GP J3 Cub 40, it had a 76" wingspan. Flew adequately with a Saito 56, but if you're using floats go bigger. The GP 60 size is 90"...is your's clipped wing? Seems awefully small for a 60 size.

Re: j3 cub engine

I'm pretty green with planes, i would think it would be a clipped wing. I bought it on sale from nytroplanes, it would make more sense to be a 40 size plane. Thanks for your help guys.

Re: j3 cub engine

I have a Goldberg anniversary cub on wheels, skis and floats . It flies great with a saito 65. All the power you would ever need.

Re: j3 cub engine

I have a GP 40 size cub with a OS 70 SII on floats and I don't think I would have gone any smaller with the motor. Flies very scale like with the floats. It's 8 1/2 lbs.

If this is the one then it is smaller and lighter, flying weight says 5.6 lbs. If that is the case the 56 saito should be enough as long as the floats are not built heavy.
