Question upgrading an OLD hz super cub

I have an OLD hz super cub (NiMH without the option on the rx/esc for Lipo) and I would like to get some more power out of it. I love to fly the plane as it is pretty relaxing but it can't even do a loop without diving first. What is the best way to upgrade the power on this without making it super hot? I still want to maintain the gentle flight.

I also have a DX6i and a spare receiver so if upgrades require changing out the esc/rx that is not out of the question - would like to keep the budget as low as possible though as there is a helicopter to buy, more batteries to buy, another plane or 3 to buy.....

Re: upgrading an OLD hz super cub

I don't have any experience with the SC. But if it were my plane, I would drop in the DSM2 brick from the HZ Supercub DSM #HBZ7357, swap the servos out for HXT900's from HK, and use a 3S lipo. This will improve the reliabilty of the stock radio system and let you use your DX6i. The stock motor will benefit from the bump in voltage to lipo (you will need to use a smaller 9x6 prop from the Supercub LP to avoid overloading the motor). These changes should give you a bit more top speed for those loops.

Depending on where you shop, these upgrades should cost about $85 (Supercub DSM rx, servos and one 3S 1300mah lipo).

Of course, the most powerful setup will still be brushless but this requires a custom motor mount, motor and brushless esc. You will still need a new RX (Spektrum AR600) and servos. Even with cheaper Hobbyking parts, this upgrade will run you about $120 including one battery and you will still have to fabricate a mount. Thats almost as much as a new Supercub LP BNF ($169).
