Absolutely. DSMX and DSM2 are compatible in both directions. So an older DSM2 transmitter works fine with a DSMX receiver (but only in DSM2 mode, of course).

This is what I got in the ''DX8 DSMX User Guide'' printed 12/10. This applies to DX5e, DX6i, DX7, DX7SE, DX8, DX10t but NOT the DX6.
A DSM2 radio will work only in the DSM2 mode with DSM2 and DSMX receivers. A DSMX radio will work in DSM2 mode with a DSM2 receiver and in DSMX mode with a DSMX receiver. EXCEPT -- DSMX upgraded DX5e and DX6i are compatible with all DSMX receivers except the high speed DSM2 receivers (like the AR7600, AR9000, etc), when using high speed DSM2 receiver with the DX5e DX6i it's necessary to manually put these transmiter into DSM2 mode. See Spektrum website for details on DX5e, DX6i mode for details.
Also note that you cannot mix DSM2 receiver with a DSMX sattelite or vice versa.
