cheaper entry level car help

I am new to the hobby and I'm looking for suggestions on a good entry level electric car/truck. I've been researching the Traxxas Stampede because I hear it's good and there are lots of parts for it. I also like that it's waterproof. If I get the regular 2wd (non vxl) can it be upgraded later to brushless? Also, I'm looking at the Losi 1/24 rally car. I know it's completely different but price is a consideration for me. I'm looking to spend no more than $300 so I know it's going to be a narrow field. I'm just looking for something to bash in my yard. I have a good amount of space, both off road as well as on road.

Any information you guys/gals can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting overwhelmed by the amount of information.

Re: cheaper entry level car help

$300 is a decent budget for a first vehicle and the stampede is a popular choice. I'd suggest against anything smaller than 1/16 for yard bashing in grass though, they are too small for it. If you want brushless then I'd suggest the 1/16 vxl e-revo or summit.

Lots of good used deals out there just have someone check it over for you.
I always recomend a kit if possible. If you build it you will be able to repair it better.

Re: cheaper entry level car help

I echo Waylander's 1/16th scale VXL (brushless) recommendations. I have the Summit 1/16th VXL and it's waterproof as well. It's a fun basher. Also look at the HPI Savage XS Flux as it flies and is waterproof as well.
Current models: Hobbico Nexstar Electric, Parkzone Spitfire Mk IX , several micros/small helis. Nothing nitro/gas.
