My roommate learned to fly on the sim, and he had the same problem, ripping around at full speed 15 feet off the ground, needless to say he crashed quite a few times because of it... and he probably looks at me funny when I take my 450 heli up until its barely a speck in the sky before trying a new maneuver.
As for realism, I don't think they will ever make a sim that flies exactly like the real thing... but... if you use the sim to practice and develop your orientations and reactions to unusual situations you will be far better off in the real world IMO.
