The mechanics of the servos are of course going to wear out. But you can inspect and see that happening. Batteries can be tested to reveal themselves as weak before they "fail"

But strictly looking at the electronics.....

Most electronic components last a good long time, almost indefinite.... except electrolytic capacitors. They basically evaporate over time. They degrade sitting on a shelf, and degrade faster with heat and usage. Nine times out of ten these caps will determine when our radios and receivers fail.

How long? No clear answer as it depends on each cap and its environment. I see a lot of references to 2000 hours of use.

If you don't want to "run to fail", Its probably safe to retire radio and receiver gear at 10 years.

Re: How Long Do Electronics Last?

On average ,I fly 200 flights per season. I log my flights so I accurately know the number of flights on each plane, etc. As a rule of thumb I discard batteries after 4 years of use regardless of use. I have never had a battery failure in 30 years of flying. Servos generally indicate when they need replacing with dirty pots or excessive twitching for some other reason. When in doubt - replace and that includes switches. A small price to pay for a safe airplane. . . Cheers

Re: How Long Do Electronics Last?

Any electronic component with a liquid(caps), moving part(relays), polymer parts (caps), glue(multi layer pcbs), reactive metals(silver or copper) will be subject to failure whether stored or used.

Liquids dry out, cases crack, moving parts wear out, springs soften, glue releases allowing layers to separate, metals corrode losing conductivity all at different rates and affected by different conditions.

Thus performance changes until the device performs out of the expected range or fails catastrophically...
