Charger recommendation for A123?

Looking for the best charger for A123's. I have two Thunderpower 1010C's that are great for charging my Lipo's, li-ion's, nimh and nicad but, will not properly charge my Duralite EXB A123's.

The charger shuts down as it cannot keep the packs in balance.

I've heard the FMA Cellpro series is good (any Canadian stores carry it?)

Any other recommendations appreciated, not looking for cheap, I want the best one available.

TIA

Mike

My Thunder Power 1010c's charge my A123 packs with ease..... Do you have the latest firmware update? I use the 205/210 balancers on my packs.

Yes, have the latest firmware and use both a 205v and 210v. The limitation of the 1010C is that it does not have the ability to reduce the charge to an individual cell so, when there is an imbalance in the pack, it will shut down when the cell with the highest voltage is full leaving the other cell only partially charged.

This would be ok if the balancer were able to keep the pack in balance while charging but, it can't dump the voltage in the high cell as fast as the charger can charge so, the result is the imbalance becomes too great and the charger shuts down to protect the high cell.

None of this matters if your packs are always in balance but, I have discovered that more often than not, this is not the case with A123's and it doesn't require much of an imbalance to create a problem.

So, was looking for a charger that can reduce or stop the charge rate to the high cell but, continue to charge the low cell to capacity.

Have read the cell pro stuff will do this, wondering if there are any others?

Thanks

Mike

Re: Charger recommendation for A123?

I'm using the A123 cans (RCC offroader) and make my own 2300 mah flight packs, once they are balanced they are usually good, I normally charge at 1C. I also have a 3s Hyperion 2200 stick that I used on my 12X, I normally have to play around a bit due to the imbalance at the end... one cell always discharges faster...

Hi Mike,

Would you consider this UN-A6 charger? It has six independent charging circuits, able to charge six cells simultaneously.

Featured characters:
1. Cut-off voltage Programmable from 1.5V to 4.2V per cell.
2. Charger system voltage can be re-calibrated.
3. High precision, accuracy up to mV.

The options can be set for Charger UN-A6:
a. cut-off voltage (1.5V to 4.2V)
b. charging current (0.3 to 5A)
c. working mode 1 to 3
d. Fully charge (4.2V/cell) or charging for storage (3.85V/cell)
e. Charging time: when charging time is set, the charging process will complete when charging time is expired or the battery is full charged whichever is earlier.
f. Voltage calibration: this is advanced function, only do it when your digital multimeter resolution is 4 1/2 (accuracy 0.0001V) or higher.

Re: Charger recommendation for A123?

I'm sure you will get Duralite's attention if their charger doesn't balance your Duralite's. Don't know if it is the best charger or not but it may be the best solution!

Interesting, must be new, I wasn't aware they had it.

Thanks

Hi Craig

How do you like that cellpro? Does it charge multiple batteries at the same time and does it balance? I have the cube and it works well but they are no longer supported so I am in need of a new charger.
