Wing center section, which is 9 feet, two outer wing sections, 15'6"ea, the fuse firewall back, with vertical stab, horizontal stab, flaps, ailerons, rudder (done) elevators. Firewall forward will depend on some variables, but that's a few months down the road.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Center section is done, out of the garage, and ready to transport. Table is all set up now for the fuse.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

I spent most of the morning cleaning up the shop, re-arranging, and storing away a few things. Once the floor was all cleared, it was time to set up. I took a pair of six foot wooden tables, placed them end to end, and ensured they were level. Then I place two sheets of ply on top, which act as the jig for the fuse frame. The frames are quite similar to the real aircraft, only wood, vice steel tube. I'd cut the last pair of centre wing ribs in such a way that the surplus would form the wing saddles. Made life a whole lot easier. Once they were blocked into place, with stringers and cross beams, I then drew out the taper to the rear of the fuselage, set up blocks to form the taper, and began assembling the top deck pieces. Once I had those in, I measured and cut the bottom stringers, and vertical supports. Everything is currently screwed, but not glued, in case any re-rigging is required. Once the fuse frame is complete, and checked over, then everything will get glued. After that, I'll do the bottom fuse section, which, like the real Hurricane, will be detachable. Makes running cables so much easier! When that is done, and set aside, the fuse is flipped upright, blocked in place, and the sides and top formers will be attached.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Nice thing about doing this based on the Mick Reeves Kit, all the design work is done, I'm just scaling it up. That's why it is going rather quickly!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Surprised the Shearwater Aviation Museum this morning, with the delivery of the Hurricane Wing Centre section. I had to wait till the road traffic cleared a bit, so got more work done on the fuse this morning. I should have the first 16 feet of the frame done by tonight! The tail section will consist of another 90 inches, and then the firewall forward section. I really need a bigger shop.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Working on the lofting, drawing out and cutting of the fuse formers. Starting with the top fuse formers, from the cockpit back. Two done tonight, hopefully by the end of this weekend, I'll have all the formers/bulkheads cut for the first 16 feet of fuse. Takes about an hour per former, with all the lofting, 4 formers to make up each section, 7 sections in total.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Ok, some photos of the progress over the past couple of days. Each of the fuselage formers are lofted right onto the ply, then cut, sanded, and set aside. Once I had all of the bottom and side formers for this section, it was time to build the belly pan. It's a simple framework of 1X4 clear pine, with 1/4 in ply stiffeners. With that screwed into place onto the fuse frame, all of the lower formers are attached. The two side formers are at the trailing edge of the wing, and help form the wing fillets.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Today's progress. Got the top rail finished on both sides, then started installing the fuselage frames. The first frame locates the aft end of the fuel tank, just in front of the instrument panel. next one back is the aft cockpit frame, and the one behind is even with the back of the canopy. Note the small area cutout for rear viewing.
