Lots of work done today, day 1 of my holidays. I managed to get more sheeting done, all around the "dog box", just behind the canopy. Also managed to get the fuse lowered down a lot, so it's at a much better height to work on the fuse top. Got the notches cut for the canopy rail, and the rail frame glued up. I can't install it until both sides are ready, as the rails have to be perfectly parallel, and level. plan will be to get the rails installed to the frames, with the canopy. Then the entire assembly will get attached to the fuse. Last two shots have one of the template canopy frames on. I'm going to bite the bullet and completely re-do the canopy frame, now that I've got all the geometry figured out. I'll get all the dog box completed first, and the nose sheeting on.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

While most of the day was taken up with Christmas lights, and clearing the driveway, I did get a few hours on the Hurricane. Second last panel on the Starboard side is now on. This was a bit worrying, due to the taper of the nose, but it went together no problems at all!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Biggest set of plans I have is 1/4.5, and a set of 1/5th. It's all done by lofting, each part is drawn out from the Mick Reeves kit, onto graph paper. Wood is rough cut to size, then I lay out a graph on the wood, and fire up the calculator. point are marked outlining the shape, then 1 in finishing nails get put on each of the points. I use a flexible batten to connect the dots. Cut out with a jigsaw, move on to the next part. Slow, but effective.

Mick Reeves is going to be looking for some royalties when this thing is put on display! LOL The lofting process is not rocket science but I sure admire your perseverance!! Great work

I spoke with him on the phone, prior to ordering. He sounded pretty enthused about the project. I'll have to send him some photos!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Well, almost done the Starboard side, 3 more stringers tomorrow, bit of sanding around the dog kennel, and done! Seat and some cockpit stuff to hit next, along with pre-cutting the panels, and ripping some more stringers. Few more days, and the 16 foot section will be complete. Another 3 and a bit feet to go on the nose, and about 8 feet of rear fuse. The rear fuse should go fairly quickly, fingers crossed. Still on track for delivering the entire fuse no later than mid-Jan.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Hey, anyone want to build a wood 1:1 scale Merlin for me? Seriously, they want a wood Merlin engine in this thing! Fortunately, there's one on a stand at the Airport Museum, at Halifax Stanfield International, so I should be able to get a ton of photos, and accurate measurements. I've also got a very detailed Merlin for my 1/24th scale Hurricane. Hmm, wooden crank, pistons and valves? lol.
