More clear pine strips glued and clamped. Couple more sets to go, and one more set of bulkheads on the bottom part of the cowl, then I can start sheeting the whole unit.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Some details on what's involved in building the engine cowl. After dividing the upper and lower portions along the panel lines, strips of clear pine are cut, and glued in 2 laminates, which will provide anchoring for the screws. On each bulkhead, 3/4 in clear pine pieces are cut, shaped, fit, and then glued into place on either side. The top portion of the cowl will be sheeted in four pieces, and will require a good glue surface all around. For the single top center bulkhead, as shown in the pics, a total of 12 pieces of pine have to be measured, cut, rough shaped, and then glued into place. When all pieces are done, then it's time for a whole lot of sanding and fairing. Then the rough sized sheeting will be cut, and test fit/trimmed several times, until final sheeting occurs. Every bulkhead on the fuselage follows this procedure, so it's a whole lot of work.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

First panel on the nose section is on, and fit is great. Quite a relief. 3 more panels, and the top of the nose section will be done!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

FIne, be that way. I just got everything cleaned up, put away, lights off in the garage, settling down to work on my A-10 in the craft room. That's ok, I'll dig out the camera, take some pics, and post, sigh.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

OK, two of the nose panels done. I'm still amazed how well the 1/8th Baltic Birch Ply bends, especially with compound curves. Each panel was rough cut to 26 inches square. One edge was marked, and fastened, then bent to shape and clamped. Few more screws to hold the panel in place, while I marked the cuts to get each to the desired shape. Remove screws, cut, fit, etc, till everything fits right. In between, had to do some sanding on the bulkheads, to get a nice flush fit all along. What would take 1/2 hr on the 1/5th scale kit, takes 1/2 a day or more in full size!
