Some shots of the past couple of days progress, working on the wing spars for the outer wing panels. Outer wings will be built to start, with the spars flat on the building table, and the ribs inserted into slots, vertically. Once all the ribs are in place, the aft main spar will get attached, again with slots for the ribs to fit into. Once that is glued and dry, then the aft portion of the ribs, back to the aft spars for the ailerons and flap sections will go in. Once that is dry, then the forward rib sections, to the leading edge will get installed, but with each wing panel lying flat. It's a great space saver, allowing me to work on both wing panels at once, and makes for easy alignment.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Today's progress. Right forward Spar is 100% complete on one side, Left Forward Spar is about 80% complete. I spent the morning at the museum, picking up more plywood, Home Depot, getting more clear pine. After a cleanup of all the mess in the shop from the past couple of days, I then pre-cut all the parts I'll need for the two spars. Once that was done, I commenced the second Spar. Pre-cutting parts, essentially making a kit, pays dividends in the long run, saving a lot of time.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

One Forward Main Spar is done, second one needs a few more hours to complete. I've cut out the Aft Main Spars, from 1/2 in plywood, they are simple construction, so should have them done tomorrow. Next week will be cutting out all of the centre rib sections.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Some shots of the centre wing rib construction. I cut blanks for all the centre wing ribs, all are the width of the max chord, length isn't exact, just close enough to work with. Once they were all cut, I then drew centre lines on all ribs. Next step, 3 horizontal lines at 1/4, 1/2 and 1 1/4 inches, for the slots that are in the forward main spar. Each rib is then marked for the vertical cuts, then over to the scroll saw. As each rib is cut, they are fit into the slots, and checked. Now that they are all in, they will be squared up, marked at the base, for re-assembly later on. Then, I need to chalk line the Aft Main Spar location, and cut each to length. Notches will be cut into the aft part of the ribs, and the fit checked with Aft Spar. After that, I'll have to mark out the rough airfoils, cut those, and then permanently attach ribs to the spars. Once that is all done, then one at a time, wing sections will be laid out flat, and all ribs sanded to ensure fairness for the wing skins. I'll install stringers and cap strips for rigidity, and get to work on the trailing edge sections.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Left wing is coming together. All the ribs were cut to length, then notched for the aft spar. Aft spar in place, and rough airfoil was cut using a template. In the process now of final sanding and fairing, four more ribs to go, and then I'll do the bottom of the airfoil. When that's all done, it all comes apart, and I'll trace the finished rib shapes onto the right wing ribs. Then I can start the gluing process. The one rib sticking up, is where the aileron/flap break is. Prior to gluing the centre sections up, they'll go down onto the floor. Then I can do the rest of the wing to the trailing edge.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Well that took a lot less time than I thought. I managed to get all the lower airfoil marked out on the ribs, so stacked them a set at a time, cut them with the jigsaw, and then over to the belt sander for smoothing out. Everything checked out great, so I've got the left wing all glued up! Won't take long tomorrow to repeat for the right wing, now that all the ribs are done and sanded.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Both outer wing centre sections are now complete, and glued. In order to work towards the trailing edges, I've put both on the shop floor, and will continue from there. One wing at a time will go back onto the tables, flat, once it's time to work on the leading edges.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

I wish they'd let me make a flyable Hurricane. Sigh. It would require substitution of yellow cedar or Sitka spruce instead of clear pine, epoxy resin vice wood glue, and some engineering work to check structural strength, but not much more. Clive Ducrois built a gorgeous all wood Spit, full size, that flew well on 300Hp. It's certainly doable, with some time, motivation, and $$ ! I'll be very happy to see the airframe together, and start working on the finishing stuff, to be sure.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Bit under the weather today. Did get a little bit done though. All the next series of ribs to the flap line. Once each part was cut, faired, sanded, etc, it then became a template for the other wing. So all the parts are ready to go, just have to assemble. Hopefully tomorrow. Next step is the wing trailing edge for the aileron section, and all those ribs.
