Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

I have not. I was worried too, there was talk of posting me very soon, which would jeopardize the entire project. However, pressure has been applied, and I'm safe at least until the summer of 2016. Ergo, I will complete the Hurricane! Also, I might just build a full sized wooden Merlin for it! I'm looking to have the wings sheeted, delivered, and the basic airframe complete, and assembled prior to the Spring Hobby Show, right after Easter. If we're really lucky, we'll have the fabric on by then as well.

Very, very good news!! It would not have been nice to have to leave the project unfinished! Glad you got a reprive!!!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Yes, thank god. I'm hoping to get the trailing edge along the flap line installed on the left wing tonight, and by the weekend, all the trailing edge. Then I'll need some muscle, put that one back on the tables. Then I can finish the leading edge, and sheet the wing. Now, my super secret plan for the leading edge, came to me yesterday. We have a couple of options. 1, we could try and form aluminum leading edges. Tricky, and expensive. 2. we could use aircraft ply, bend it around no problem. Expensive! Stupid me, after years of building cedar strip canoes, kayaks, and skiffs, I totally forgot about that. Simple solution, run a pile of pine through the table saw. Put a bead edge on one side, cove on the other, and strip plank the leading edge. Fast, easy, cheap, just a bit of sanding. Voila.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Hmmm... not to be too much of a NERD.

But the total Wingspan of the Hurri is 40'.

LESS the width of the Fuselage... and I generalized at; "over 30' of Leading Edge.'

(and you thought that I was slightly misinformed... )

That is STILL a lot of sawdust that you are going to produce!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Not at all, you're totally correct. Center section is about 10 feet, can't remember the fuse width off the top of my head, so probably about 34 ish? But if I think 40, and then only have to do 34 ish, I'll feel like I got away with something! lol Fortunately, with the bead and cove edge, and using 3/4 inch wide strips, sanding will go fast. I could sand one of my Prospector Canoes inside and out in about 4-5 hrs, and ready to glass. Lots of practice! We have a wood fireplace, so guess where all the scrap bits go! Those than aren't too small to use for various RC projects, of course!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

OK, finally got some work done. I had to do some consulting with my books on the Hurricane, and a plastic model, and compare to the RC Mick Reeves Kit. The trailing edge on the kit has a notch, but no clear definition of how wide the trailing edge piece should be. Adding to the confusion, the exact length of the trailing edge varies, from root to tip of the flap section. Photos, model, all show that the flaps are a constant chord. After a bit of checking, I'm assuming the Mick Reeves kit uses a tapered trailing edge, which makes model sense. With that sorted out, I drew out and cut a dozen trailing ribs, six for each wing. These pieces, as shown in the photos, also include a partial flap rib, that I'll use later for flap doublers. I cut those sections out on the bandsaw, and then commenced with attaching the ribs. I used small finishing nails to locate and hold each rib, and a batten and clamps at the trailing edge, to hold the alignment.
