The photos show five of the six ribs in place. I need to ensure the outer rib is exactly aligned, to ensure the right taper of the leading edge of the wing, so I haven't permanently attached that rib yet. Once I do, I'll install the final rib piece. Once everything is dry, I'll add spruce on either side of the ribs for strength, and then notch for stringers, and sheet, to ensure they don't get bumped and break.

More shots of the left wing. I've started sheeting over the flap bay, and have cut the final spar, forward of the aileron. Using 3/4 in square stringers to create an I beam. Spar is jigged at the proper angle, and now fitting ribs in place.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Left wing is now all framed up! Once I get the stringers in, it will go flat on the work tables. Then I can frame up the leading edge section, and get to work on sheeting the top. I'll have to figure out the hatch sizes for the guns, ammo trays, etc, and work those in, of course.

You do such good work!! Beautiful!!

What will you use for hinges? I'm sure Robarts hinges are a bit on the small side!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Hinges are super simple, four angle brackets per hinge, same as I did on the elevators. Flaps on the real deal are tube leading edge, with bushings, and a U-joint between the outer wing flaps and center flap, will copy that, accurate and easy to do.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Wow.

I cant believe how beautifully this plane is coming together. I love how you are paying attention to the level of detail like the location and sizes of the access hatches and ammo trays.

Honestly, when this gets finished and put on display in the museum, I'd like to take a trip down to the museum just to see it in person and say "I watched the guy build this day by day on an online forum"

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Thanks for the great comments. Basic airframe should be done by end of Feb, then we'll have to work on installing controls, details, fabric, etc. Hoping to have it assembled to show at the Museum's spring hobby show, after Easter, and finished for an official unveiling sometime this summer!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Just found your journal - - the Reynolds Museum in Wetaskiwin Alberta has a non-flying Hurricane on display there. They might be of some assistance on any details you require. Also know that there was a non-flyable Lancaster rebuilt at Nanton Alberta. They may also be able to shed some light on runnable engines you might use. Awesome project - - all the luck to the guys on the team !

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Team? lol I am the team! I'm the only one on the planet stupid enough to say, "sure, I'll build a full sized Hurrican all by myself!" lol I've got a ton of reference material, as well as direct access to Hurricane Restorations in the UK. They've been superb in helping out. Just about done all the stringers for the left wing upper surface, once that's done, I can get the gun/ammo hatches framed up, and then get going on the leading edge, and the sheeting.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

WOW ! All by yourself??? Must be "mental" ! ! ! Your past comments seemed to suggest to me there was a team - - Sorry about that! I'm speechless to say the least. Had a homebuilt in the 60s and sold it before completion - - know the work it entails, much less a WW 2 fighter. Wishing you "Luck" was a clear under-statement on my part given what you mention.
