Wing tip skins are on. 3 pieces, cut diagonal to the grain, to give the best flexibility for shaping. Lots of windex helped too!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

So I went to the Shearwater Aviation Museum today, to do some measurements on the wing centre section. The Curator asked to chat with me. This year is the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, so lots planned this fall. She's been asked if there is a chance the Hurricane could be used for some events, airshows, etc, etc. Of course, she doesn't want to commit unless I can get the plane done in time, and she wanted my blessing, and requested that I attend to look after the plane, and be a part of showing it off to the public. Wow! I'm all in, hopefully the military will allow.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Just gotta get it done. Museum experts will take on the fabric work, I've got a crew, we'll look after priming and painting. We've got a vinyl guy all lined up for the markings, and they are digging now for the prop, spinner, and even some landing gear. Plan a while ago was to hang the plane in the museum, so no gear. That was pretty disappointing, but now, if we get the road show, we'll get the gear!

Dave, how about a jack or number 6 sized hand plane and some female LE templates to shape the leading edge "reasonably fast" - a lot of wood shavings to be sure. Once the shape is obtained, remove the edges left by the plane with disk sander. A longer soled hand plane should allow you to shape a continuous edge faithful to the template - without dips and raised areas.

You could initially slice away some excess stock with a couple of cuts on bandsaw or table saw before the LE is attached to wing.

A professional woodworking shop would have a shaper and with a custom made cutting insert, they could form a convex edge but that wing leading edge has got to be 12" plus in height, beyond the scope of just about any shaper.

Great project.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

I've done that, planed myself to death with the tail feathers. Marc "Coyote" took one look at the wing, and commented that some high-density foam, a couple of templates, and an hour's work, I'd have a leading edge, ready to be glassed. Damn I wish I'd thought of that! lol So that's the cunning plan now. Thanks Marc!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Two coats of sanding sealer on, two more to go! Tomorrow, wing goes back on it's leading edge, so I can finish the interior, and prep it for the bottom sheeting.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Three shots of the latest progress. Left Wing is now on it's leading edge, and I'm working on the interior of the wing, as well as final shaping and sanding of the underside of the wing. Right wing is on the tables, and the Aft Aileron Spar is now in place. Having pre-cut all the parts, while cutting parts for the Left Wing, this is a pretty quick process. Expecting things to move along pretty quick now. Part that sucks is working between the wings, especially kneeling/sitting on a cold cement floor!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Not fun, especially with wiping out on our skating rink of a parking lot at work. I've also been clearing the tons of snow off the roof of the house, and chipping several inches of ice from our 150 foot driveway. I'm getting too old for winters. Tonight, just tons of sanding. Yay.
