Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

I met a few on the weekend, ladies that worked on aircraft during the war, even got some pointers for fabric time!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Haven't taken a lot of pics, hard to visualize all the sanding, touching up, filling etc. Today, we finished off the Horizontal Stab and Elevators, and over to the Museum's folks for fabric work! I've got the Vertical Stab and Rudder at home for final touch-ups, they'll be ready for fabric in a couple of days. The fuselage has seen a lot of fitting, sanding, etc, as well, getting that ready for fabric, as well as framing up the belly pans. Another week and they should be all good to go!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Tons of work going on, sorry I haven't posted in a while. Pics will tell a bit, but I'll see if I can write all the stuff in the works. First, all tail feathers are done, and in the line up for varnish, and then fabric. First section of the belly pan is done, minus final sanding, and the fillet ahead of the tailwheel is well under way. Right side of fuse is getting the final touches prior to prep for fabric, left side isn't far behind, hoping to have it ready by end of this weekend. Paint is bought, it's Benjamin Moore Aura, exterior latex, with a flex agent (won't crack over fabric), computer matched to the FS numbers for the camo, and the primer. Drum roll, the first piece of fabric, is now on the Horizontal Stab! It should be complete by early next week, and the Vertical Stab is next in line. Tons of all the picky stuff on the go, but well worth it. Once the fuse is ready for fabric, it will be set aside, and the wing assembly will begin. Still hoping to have that done by end of May, and be painting!!!!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

This weekend, will hopefully see the aft fuse done, and ready to cover. Also the belly pan, and perhaps the smaller forward and aft pans. John will hopefully get all the filling and sanding done on the left outer wing panel's underside, and a coat of primer on. If we can swing it, we'll finish the marking for the wing center section to fuse, tidy that up, and work on the wing fillets.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

First shot is the completed centter belly pan. Second shot shows the primer going on all of the structural parts of the fuse. Parts that were wood on the real Hurricane are coated with sanding sealer. This will prevent any moisture issues. Third shot, right side wing fillet is now underway. Once the wing fillets are done, the fuse can get it's fabric.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

More paint today on the frame, bit more advances on the wing fillet. Horizontal stab will get it's primer early next week, and the rest of the tail feathers every few days after, while I try to get the fuse ready for fabric, as soon as the tail feathers are ready for paint. Left wing will be getting some paint tomorrow!!!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Lots of work underway today. Leeann finished all of the interior green primer on the fuse structure. She then tackled cutting all the 1/2 in ply wing fillet supports, and all the 1 1/2 in foam filler blocks. Once all supports are glued into place, the foam will be epoxied in, sanded, and the entire fillet glassed. Cheap, but labour intensive! Leeann also got 2 coats of the Sky paint on the bottom of the left wing. I worked on the engine cowl, prepping it for more sheeting, as well as working on the finishing touches on the left side of the fuse. Tomorrow, once I've given things a good look, the right side of the fuse will get the epoxy varnish, in preparation for fabric. Hopefully I'll get all the fillet work done, minus the fibreglass on the right side, and make progress on the left wing fillet. Once they are done, and fabric is on, we can start the painting of the fuse. Horizontal Stab will get the aluminum primer on the fabric shortly, then we'll get it painted. Guys doing the fabric are part-time at the museum/volunteers, so it's at their pace. Once the fuse is prepped though, we'll have a couple of weeks worth of work on the wings, and we can get them assembled, and painted. After that, it's flaps, ailerons, canopy, and detail work.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Today, got the aft portion of the wing fillet cut and shaped from pink foam. Simply a matter of stacking rough cut pieces, glue with 5 min epoxy, then cut and shape. Also have two sections, about 14 inches each done along the wing. We draped a sheet over the right side of the fuse, pulled tight, to check for fairness, and all looks good. Thursday, they'll put the first coat of epoxy varnish on the right side of the fuse. Hopefully fabric will follow next week. I also did more framing on the nose section, should have that done by next weekend, and if I can get some cheap labour, I'll get it attached to the rest of the fuse.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Fair bit accomplished today, two more panels installed on the engine cowling. Also, the fuselage has now been fully prepped for it's fabric. Horizontal Stab has the first of 3 coats of aluminum primer, which is a mix of paint with aluminum powder, for UV resistance. Once the 3 coats are done, one coat per day, it will be set aside for painting. Elevators now have their fabric on, Rudder is the last tail feather to go, fabric is cut and ready to apply. Thanks greatly to John Barnes, doing all the prep work, and John Webber, the Museum's AME and fabric guru!
