Sorry, haven't updated in a while. Winter slowed things down, due to no heat in the garage, and not enough space in the workshop! I've got the main center spar done vor the wing center section, all of the center section wing ribs cut, and the sub spars are all cut as well. Need a warm evening or two, and will get that all assembled. We've got the metal tube fuselage parts sourced out, and welders on hold for that, the Museum's engineer is away till late April, but soon as he's back, we'll have the material delivered to the museum, and fabricate the welding jigs for the sides, top, and bottom. By that time I should have most of the fuselage bulkheads cut out, and they'll get bolted on to the metal frame. Meantime, soon as the wing center section is all framed, I'll carry on with the rest of the tail feathers!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Dave, if you happen to find yourself in the Ottawa area... I see that Vintage Wings is currently restoring a Hurricane. There are some pics & info on their website, but if you get a chance to visit in person... maybe they'd let you have a look?

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Probably, if I get out there. I've got access to Hurricane Restorations now, in the UK, they sent us all the drawings for the steel tube fuselage frame, and offered any assistance we might need! Landing gear would be nice! lol

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Well seems like forever since I made any progress with the full scale Hurricane. A move to a new house, busy summer of flying, and new job as Senior Flight Instructor for Sea King AES Ops (Airborne Electronic Sensor Operator). Way too busy a year. However, I've cleaned up enough room in the garage to get back at it. I'd already rough cut the center wing ribs, and pre-cut the parts for the main box spar. So, stacked the ribs tonight, and attacking them with the belt sander, to ensure they're all a perfect match. Once that is done, I'll cut templates for the many cutouts in the ribs, and get those done. Cut some notches, and then begin the assembly process.

Oh, the center wing section in the photos, that's the Mick Reeves 1/4.5 scale that I'm lofting up from.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Wow. Nice big ribs. What thickness and type of wood are you using for the ribs again?

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

The centre section ribs are 1/2" Baltic Birch ply. Outer ribs will be 1/8th" Baltic Birch, with 1 inch wide by 1/8th thick capstrips, which are held in place and then secured by thickened epoxy and fibreglass tape. Gives lots of strength, and light weight for the outer panels.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Almost done sanding the ribs, should have that done tomorrow after work, then I'll do all the cutouts, and finally start the assembly!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

All the ribs for the center section are sanded, and I'll have all the cutouts done this morning. After that, it's assembly time!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Thank god for a really flat floor. It didn't take too long to do the cut-outs for each of the ribs. With that done, marked the rib locations on the aft main spar box, and commenced fastening.
