Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Since the fabric started going on, I've been thinking that a lot. Even as the designer/builder, it's pretty surreal.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Thanks for the kind words everyone, it's greatly appreciated. Today's chores, leeann will be finishing the paint on the rudder, some touch up on the wing center section, and then she'll be filling sanding and prepping the second outer wing section. I'm hopefully going to get the bulk of the wing fillets done, and get the cockpit forward section filled, sanded, and ready for paint.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Good progress yesterday, Leeann is focusing on touch ups, while I continue with the wing fillets, forward fuse, and canopy work. I'll try to actually remember the camera today!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Perfect timing to ask about the canopy, but it's uber simple. Sides are flat, verticals all tilt back about 15 degrees, so made the frames, then attached them to a base. Outer frames attach at the ends, inner pair are inset into the wood. The horizontal frames are 1/8th ply, glued and clamped in place. The internal stiffeners will be 1/4 ply, as are the vertical frames. Once it's all framed up, we take a sheet of lexan, and heat form it around the canopy frame. Outside frames, from 1/8th ply, will then go on top, and everything bolted together, just like the real deal. Canopy will then be attached to side mounted drawer slides, to open and close. Might get breezy flying around, or hot and sunny, so gotta have the option! lol

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Forgot to mention, wing center section now painted first coat of paint, both sides, and all the tail feathers, belly pan, and seat are 100% done. By Friday, the aluminum paint should be done on the fuse, along with all the sanding and filling. Once that and the wing fillets are done, she's ready for paint. The fuse will be rolled out of it's current location, leaving room for the wing assembly to begin.
