Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

We feel the same way. Having the fuse in the main part of the museum is the first time we've been able to walk around, and see it all together. Once wings and main landing gear are on, it will I think, be a bit of a shock!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Second coat of the dark earth is done on the fuselage. Running out of things for Leeann to paint! I'm well into getting the spar joiner setup figured out. Once everything is setup for the left wing, I can duplicate all the parts in short order, and get the right wing panel done as well. Also working on the leading edge for the wing center section, so I can match up the outer wing panels. One main gear leg has been bolted into place for a fit check, and it's looking good. I'll have a pile of pics this weekend.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Yes, lol I know, more photos. I'll post a pile tomorrow. We attached one of the fuselage belly pans today, and the access hatch on the fuselage for the tail controls. I'm just about done fabricating the spar joiner for the left outer wing, and hopefully tomorrow I can sheet the top of the inner leading edge section of the left wing. Once that is done, I need to finish boxing in the spar joiner, and close the bottom of the wing.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Rats, lol forgot the camera. I promise I'll get pics up soon. Mostly fabrication today, the second wing spar joiner, fine tuning the first one, and then sheeting the last of the outer wing panel's leading edge. Also cut out the spot for the landing light. Had our engineer take a look at the structure, seems I've overbuilt it, so that's good! Hopefully left wing panel will be done with by week's end, and we can start setting it up for paint, while I assemble the right wing panel. Still have flaps and ailerons to go, but the blanks are all cut, and hoping they'll go fast.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

OK folks, picture time! Finally got the latest photos downloaded, and downsized. I'll cover what I've been doing first, then show off some of the work of the museum folks that are tackling the landing gear.

First, the left wing panel is now joined to the wing center section! I finished the spar joiner tonight, and with a bit of trepidation, checked the fit. Nothing to worry about, it slid in wonderfully. The outer portion of the spar joiner is screwed to the forward most wing spar, while the inner portion slides into a box frame on the wing center section, at the leading edge. You can see in one photo that I've marked all the drilling locations for the wing bolts. I've temporarily used long wood screws, to hold things in place. When it comes time to drill the bolt holes, I'll remove one screw at a time, drill the hole, insert a bolt, then on to the next one. Also, I've now started laminating the clear pine leading edge.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Next, the main landing gear. We're super fortunate to have Chris, a young Sea King Tech, who's in love with lathes. He's turning the spindles, and all of the parts that will make the landing gear as scale as possible. The gear starts with an outer tube, and then a smaller diameter tube, for the oleos. We've acquired, thanks to the Museum's AME, John Webber, a set of tires and rims, but they are from a dual wheel setup, so spindles won't work. Chris has turned a set of new spindles, that will be welded onto the oleos. He's also doing all the work for the sway brace, and gear retraction/extension cylinders, and all the neat bits that will make the gear really stand out! A large angle bracket will be bolted into the wing leading edge, onto which the main gear leg will be welded. Simple, strong, effective, and it will look perfect!
