All the plywood on the aircraft is Baltic birch. It's wonderful stuff, and quite reasonably priced.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Sorry, slow on the uptake. For all, Robert Bury, and several other Canadian specialty lumber places, carry Baltic Birch Ply. It's far superior to lite ply, and comes in thicknesses from 1/8th inch up. At Robert Bury, a 5 X 5 foot sheet of 1/8" is under $20. I've been using it for RC aircraft, and 2 flying homebuilt aircraft, for decades now. Great stuff. Hey, I also just got wind yesterday, of a Nova Scotia fellow who is building a flying 3/4 scale Hawker Sea Fury. Anyone know about this??

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

3/4 scale Sea Fury!?!

Had not heard about that. That will be awesome! Not to mention huge. R/C or manned?

Baltic Birch is great stuff! It's the go-to ply of choice for high-power rocket applications too. Does Robert Bury operate out of NS?

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Manned silly, you know how big that is? It's second hand info, so not 100% sure. I do know there is a kit available for a 1/2 scale flying Sea Fury, but that takes a 100 HP lycoming. Seems the fellow building this one has a 7 cylinder radial for it, so most likely larger than 1/2 scale. Google Rober Bury, they have many locations, but there's one in Burnside Industrial Park, about 10 minutes away from me. If you're ever out this way, I can load you up with tons of scrap pieces from the Hurricane, from 1/8th up to 3/4" stuff.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Hey, just cuz it's big doesn't mean someone would try to do it as r/c!

Thanks for the offer! I really do want to get back down there again. Soon would be nice, but it's been hard getting away lately.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Given that we've got 10,000 feet of runway for R/C, I've been tempted to build a Pietenpol Air Camper, and fly it, just need someone on the ground holding a transmitter. At altitude no one would know that I'm not a plastic life sized pilot! lol

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Lots of work done on the weekend, more work on the right wing, and the ailerons. Most fun though, was cutting the prop blades to shape, and then test fitting them to the base of the spinner. We've also laminated up the spinner, from foam, and started roughing out the shape. Once we're a bit closer, we'll put the spinner on a bowl turning adapter, and finish up on the lathe, for perfect roundness and taper.
