We'll certainly put up a shot of the completed pink foam spinner in place, prior to painting it. Should make for a good laugh. Worked on the gear doors today, lots of detailing to go into those, and managed more work on the right wing, to get it ready for sheeting. For some reason, that part is going way slower than I'd like, whereas the prop blades and spinner are moving along faster than expected.

Thanks, just wish the progress was faster! lol Like to have her done ASAP, so we can take a bit of a break, and get on with other projects. Tons of RC stuff to do, not to mention house reno's.

Replica Spitfire and Hurricane on display at Parliament Hill for the Battle of Britain parade on Sunday 20-Sep-15. See link, posts # 122 and #126 for photos.

Dave would you know what materials the fuselage and wing skins are made from on the Spitfire and Hurricane?

I have not been to see them in person, and I cannot tell by the photos? I am not sure if they came from the National Aviation Museum or some other local Aviation Museum.

Roger

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

I know that YO-Y is a fibreglass replica, built in the UK, one of 18 built. From doing a bit of digging, the Spit is also a glass replica. Not overly impressed with their attempts at a banged up bumpy fuse, nor using glass to simulate the fabric. CWH Museum bought this to replace their original Hurricane that was destroyed by fire. The Spit looks considerably better, in my view, again, it's a glass replica. As far as I can tell from searching, last glass replica came out of the UK in 2010, and only the one here in Canada. Note, the fin flash, it's too early for Battle of Britain, No 1 RCAF by then had the smaller Red White Blue fin flash that we've got on ours, and there were no roundels on the underside of the wing. We literally had to pick a specific day, 6 July 1940 for our replica, to ensure complete accuracy of the markings. No 1's Hurricane's prior to July were their original aircraft, and not up to date for combat, they were traded in for new off the production line Hurri's, with the standard markings at that date. Later on all the markings were changed again, including addition of the underwing roundels, but not until after the peak of the battle. It's a nightmare sourcing all the correct info, then trying to verify with an un-censored photo with a known date.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Hi Dave, there is a glass Spitfire in Kitchener at store on Victoria street , on a pedestal, and there is a Spitfire and a Hurricane, both glass in Windsor, They were put up on display after they took the Lancaster(real) down for restoration for non lying display............. I may be corrected, but that is my understanding about the restoration............... Al

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Interesting to know. I was only able to find one listing of glass Hurricane replica's, from which I gathered there was only the one. Hard to find anything about the Spits, however I do know a company in the UK has been replacing original Spits with replicas, in or to restore the originals to flying condition. Glad to see a few have made it over. Lots of discussions of late as to whether the originals should be flying, due to their historic value.

Dave; you are the man! Thank-you for the information, I knew you would be the person who would have the answers to my questions.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

The glass replica's went for around $100,000 ea, plus the 40 foot sea container and shipping. Ours will top out at $10,000, so I think we did well all things considered!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Pics tomorrow, got a large amount of prep work done for more wing sheeting, and also worked on pre-cutting parts for the detailing on the inner gear doors. CTV News has gotten wind of the project, looking at filming next Friday. Still awaiting military approval, but if it goes ahead, I'll post the air date/time.
