Been wondering that myself! Also, will they be doing it with or without someone in the pilot's seat?

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

They are going to be hanging it from the ceiling of the museum, so they have to know how much it weighs and where the actual CG of the plane is to decide where they need to attach cables. Dave has done an amazing job building this thing, and to see it come together is fantastic.

Cheers!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

What Wayne said! lol It's an old wooden truss hangar, and the weight and balance will be critical for the engineers to determine if it can be hung or not, and if yes, how many wires to how many trusses to spread the load. I'd rather it not be hung, to be honest, but there's simply not enough room in the museum, and there's a Beech Expediter to come in from the cold.

Good Lord!

If you had known that they were planning on hanging it from the rafters 'LAST YEAR' you might have been able to build in some hooks or structural supports... as it is they are going to have to do WHAT?

Drill holes? ... and hope that when they hang up this historical reproduction that it doesn't break in half and fall onto another historical plane...

Wow.... this story just keeps getting... more upsetting...

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Calm down, we built an insanely strong wing spar, and if you look at the pics, just above where the landing gear is, there's two heavy lifting points built in, that attaches to the landing gear support box, and is bolted through the center wing spar, and 1 1/2 inches of ply. The tail section has a natural strong point as well, where the plate for the tail wheel is attached. There's another point where the aft fuse section is attached to the forward section, that can be used as well. The museum has expertise in structural engineering, as well we have a crane expert, plus military construction engineers. To top it off, the Hurricane walk around book clearly shows a Hurricane suspended, and she's the real deal, complete with engine, avionics, etc, so we're considerably lighter. I'd just rather people be able to see it up close, and I'd like to pop back to the museum in the future, climb in, have a seat, and recall the build!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Just one photo today, the spinner. All done, filled, sanded, and first coat of primer green. Tomorrow, I'll cut out for the prop blades, and then get to work finishing the blades, so we can get those attached to the hub, painted, and installed onto the nose.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Oh yee of little faith! lol I really wasn't overly optimistic about the whole thing, but had no choice. Turning something that big, and out of round at the start, on a lathe was insane. But fun too!
