Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Absolutely, she's got a long list of paint jobs from me, will keep her busy for a while. She mastered fibre glassing on her first attempt, on her TF Cessna 182, and she's far better at iron-on coverings than I am.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

So along with everything else she does, Leeann's become a stripper! She did some stripping today, in front of me and some friends, with some help from the Shearwater Aviation museum's AME, John Webber, who's a master stripper. Even without music, it was fun! lol Oh, I mean stripping paint, by the way, off of the museum's latest acquisition, a Beech Expeditor. It flew out of Shearwater in the late 50s. Leeann also got the radiator done, paint wise, and we'll attach to the fuse later in the week. Also, our first shot at doing the graphics, the 49in diameter upper wing roundel. If you haven't used the wet method for laying down graphics, it's super easy, works like a charm.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Latest progress! Radiator is now attached to the fuse, and I've started the fuse lettering. This will be YO-E. It was one of the new Hurricane I's, metal wings, etc, issued to No 1 RCAF Sqn on arrival in England, and flying as of our date of 1 June 1940. Have the parts now that I need to attach the gear doors, so will get that done tomorrow. Also have the hinges for the flaps, so wing center section will get those installed this week as well.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Did you mention whether or not there will be any simulated weathering to the model when its done? At this point it still looks like a newly painted plastic model..LOL

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

It's certainly not my area of expertise. I've spoken to a couple of plastic model builders, but they're pretty nervous about tackling something this big, and donating their time to do so. That being said, at the date we're using for the markings, No 1 Sqn RCAF has just handed over their Canadian Hurricanes, with fabric covered wings, no armour plating, etc, for brand new off the line Mk 1s, ready for combat. She'll be hung up in landing configuration, could be YO-Es delivery flight! Couple of pics, got the gear doors on, and the right inner flap.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Both inner flaps, sheeting between the flaps, and access panels are complete. Next, is the final bit of work around the cockpit, and finishing the fairing between the nose, and wing.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Today, we did some arts and crafts. Stripped more paint off the expeditor, did some graphic arts, cut the vinyl roundel pieces we needed, and the last of the letters, E. As the GA is out till the New Year, we tackled the work ourselves, oldschool, trammel, sharp blade, ruler, square, and some high school math. Came out ok!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

We also finished the top of the cockpit area, behind the canopy, and got that painted, as well as starting on the framework for the windscreen. Hopefully we can finish off the windscreen tomorrow, and more around the wing leading edge and fuselage.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Lots of work on the Hurricane, and the Expeditor today. We're well past the halfway mark for stripping paint off the Expeditor fuselage. On the Hurricane, got the right side leading edge filled, sanded, and ready for paint. Also fabricated the last two panels under the nose. Between bits, started cutting and fitting more frames to the windscreen, and cut one side window, and the windshield. Also marked and removed the forward belly pan, and cut for the stringers. First 2 feet of the forward belly pan is sheeted, stringers on the rest. I'll have that done, and ready for fabric tomorrow. John Webber, the Museum's AME, will be working with Leeann Thursday, showing her the ropes on doing the fabric. Assuming I get the belly pan and windscreen done tomorrow, that leaves the left leading edge, forward portion of the wing fillet, and the belly section behind the tailwheel. We're days from completing this project! Not sure when we'll get word from the engineers on hanging her up, but hopefully early in the New Year.
